The Marino Department have received a telegram from Russell stating* that though a search of Redhead and adjacent islands had been made, no more wreckage was discovered. The wreckage at Rnnrhiti is to be sent to Auckland for the purposft of identification. The U.S.S. Company intended to send the steamer Waihi tonight to search for the missing steamer Taupo, bat all anxiety was allayed on receipt of a teUgram from Kekcrangu this afternoon stating that the Taupo passed there at 4 p.m., heading South. Sho had been sheltering in Port Underwood. To-day. — In response to the proposal from the Mayor of Hawera, suggesting a fund for a, national memorial to Sir H. Atkinson, the Mayor iutends to call a public meeting to consider the matter. G. B. Davy and Colonel Roberts, R.M., nt Masterton, have been appointed as a Commission to enquire into the complaint of Nicholas Frydey, Permanent Militia man, that was prevented from obtaining promotion or exchange into the police, and whose caso w&s before Parliament this session. AUCKLAND, To-day. The Rev. J. Chew has resigned the pastorate of the Bercsford Street Congregational Church, and proceeds to England. A meeting of the Auckland Railway League resolved to telegraph to the Auckland members thafc the vote of L 105.000, proposed for the construction of the North Island trunk line, sheuH be strenuously opposed by the Auckland and Taranaki members till tho report ou the rival route by the Parliamentary Committee was presented to the House. A boy named Miller, 15 years ©f age, is missine from the Pukerumi gnmfield, north of Helensville. A search party is out. The identity of the wreckage found near Russell has been established by Captain i'arquhar, of the Clansman, as that of the Auckland schooner Reward, wrecked at the Oolvilles in 1887. The numbers 75134 on the combings coincide with the register. The figure 4is partly erased and illegible. The piece of panel is part of the deck house of some other vessel, probably thrown overboard. Th© South British Insurance Company's report for the year ending August 13th ahows a profit of L 20,189 exclusive of L 8199 brought forward, L 20.000 transferred to reserve fund, and a dividend at the rate of 10 per eeut. for the last half year is recommended. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. NAPIER, To-day. At a public meeting a resolution was carried, with only two dissentients, in favor of raising a further loan of L 200,000 to complete the breakwater and harbor. WOODVILLE, To day. During the continuation of the case against Syms, chemist, Mrs Hall said accused used two instruments upon her, and gave her medicine which made her feel very ill. In cross-examination she admitted that she had been charged with being a person of unsound mind. She had been treated by doctors for an internal derangement for two years.
On resuming after the evening adjourn menb Constable Trainer gave evidence that ha saw Mrs Hall ill at her sister-in-law's, and took a statement ffora her. Mr Edwards objected to the constable giving particulars of the statements. After a long argument the witness was permitted to state that Mrs Hall told him Accused had given her medicine, statin? this would put her right. Mrs Hall's statement in Court was not quite the same as given him. The Court adjourned at> 10 p.m. The case was resumed at 9 a.m. His Worship ruled against the admissibility of further evidence and of Mrs Hall's deposition to the constable. Norah Walsh, sister-in law of Mrs Hall, stated the latter came from Woodville to her hoaae, where she became ill. She wna seized with vomiting and suffered great pain. At Mrs Hall's request Dr. Davenport was called in, and he considered the signs not consistent with ordinary illness, which Mrs Hall said was the matter with her. Saw Mrs Hall take medicine which made her very ill and vomit. LYTTELTON, Today. Tie Taupo arrived last night. She took shelter from the southerly gale in Pork Underwood. MASTERTON, Last night. The evidence in the slander case, Clark V. Naylor, went to shew that Naylor had mentioned Clarke's name in connection with the poisoning case on more than one occasion, but witnesses contradicted themselves as to the actual words used. Plaintiff, under cross-examination, stated that he did not respond to the invitation of the Woodville Examiner to show his whereabouts on the night of the poisoning because he thought the articles were inspired by Naylor. He had not taken proceedings before on the advice of his solicitor, because ho wished the police to solve the mystery. He admitted having been on unfriendly terms with the deceased Dickson, and having written a strong letter to him. Mr Toßswill, for the defence, applied for ft nonsuit on the ground that the actual words set out in the statement had not been proved. His Honor, Juds;e Robinson, decided not to grant a nonsuit. The evidence for the defence wa3 therefore taken, and concluded at 4.30. Naylor denied the allegation of the plaintiff as to the use of the slanderous words. Altogether he was subjected to a severe cressoxamination. new has transpired bearing on the Pahiatua poisoning case. The Court was densely crowded all through the case, sensational disclosures being expected. At six o'clock the jury retired, and in twenty minutes returned with a verdict for plaintiff for L 5 and costs L2O 14s.
