[By Tkleoiuph.— Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Today. Mr W. H. Lon?, of Johnsville, claims to have discovered a process whereby cow hair, hitherto allowed to w<iste, can bo extensively used in the manufacture of blankets, ruga, etc. The hair unfit for wearing he proposes manufacturing into felt. Petititions have been received by Government praying for the release of Mr Haegen from Ashurst, Woodville, Pahiatua, Ekotahuna, Kumeroa, Danevirke, Waipawa, and Napier. The triennal Conference of Chief Inspectors of Stock of the Australasian colonies, which is the first held in this colony, will meot hero next month. Representatives from Tasmania, Queensland, and New South Wales will attend. The Doric, from Lyttelton, arrived at Plymouth yesterday with passengers well and meat in good condition. In consequence of the anniversary day falling on Sunday the Wellington Racing Club have fixed the summer meeting for the Monday and Wednesday following, which would interfero with the Christchurch summer meeting on January 28. The Canterbury Jockey Club has been asked to postpone their meeting for a week, which would still leave ample lime before the Dunedin meeting.
The murder case was resumed to-day when several now witnesses were produced. Walter Smith, driver, said Finley fired first at Greenrose, then I McDonald, then Greenrose again, saying each time " One for you." Finley had been knocked down and Greenrose kicked at him when he took the revolver from his pocket. Witness' attention was drawn to the discrepancy between his and the other evidence, but stuck to his version. James Gibbs said Greenrose fell at the second shot and Finley then had a revolver in his hand. The latter snapped it at Lynch, but succeeded in the next attempt, and it was at Lynch the third shot was fired. This witness gave a clear account of the shooting, from which it would appear only four shots in all were fired, not iive. The medical men who acted in consultation on the Premier's case were Drs Fell, Anson, and Martin, acting with Dr Henry. They do not consider the patient's condition is likely to take a serious turn provided he does not attempt to return to the House this session, and is for a time absolutely free from work and worry. They consider the present trouble is a relapse consequent on the Premier's anxiety to return to his post before lie ] was well enough to do so. AUCKLAND, To day. A Maori named Hoaai Petera attempted the life of Akupata Haki at Kaikohe with an axe, and severely wounded him, Petera has been arrested.
The Post Office, as a precautionary measure, are erecting a fumigating house with a special jetty near Wynyard pier for fumigating the mails from cholera in footed ports. The Auckland teachers have formed a Union on similar lines to the National Teachers' Union of England, for the purpose of promoting the welfare of the teaching community. The Union is intended to embrace all teachers throughout the colony. During a thunderstorm this morning a chimney at the King's Arms hotel was partly demolished. There was no other damage clone. Ah Chee, Chinese merchant, was committed for trial this morning on charges of receiving stolen goods from boys.
CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Arthur Walasby and Arthur Nind, two of the crew of the Aorangi, were lined LlB 18s and costs to-day for smuggling cigars.
