London, Sept. 16. General Booth asks for L 50.000, and has proclaimed a self-denial week among Salvationists. He states he is determined to proceed with his over-sea colony, and does not intend to fail. Sept. 18.— The Economist thinks the best effect of the stoppage of colonial I borrowing has been the reduction of the number of Government employes, and an increase of farmers. Captain Grenfell, the English explorer, engaged in dolimitine the frontier of the Orange Free State, is besieged by natives in Lunda. Washington, Sept. 17. Mr Thompson, city assessor of Philadelphia, was accidentally imprisoned in a safe. He had to stay there for many hours, and the effect was to drive him insane. At Savaii, Samoa, a few days ago, there was an earthquake lasting about six to seven seconds. It was so severe that stone ■wall's were thrown down.
