The Homestead Strike

FRICK'S ASSAILANT RECEIVES A HEAVY SENTENCE. New York, Sept. 20. Bergmann, who attempted to murder Frick, manager of Carnegie's works at Homestead, during the late strike, has been sentenced to twenty-two years' -impriaonment. News by mail states :— Since the deadly assault made by Alexander Bergman, an Anarchist and Socialist, on Manager Frick, of Carnegie's ironworks.at the Homestead, Pennsylvania, the strikers have not been bo demonstrative in their actions. Besides, the presence of the military prevents any serious outbreaks. Bergman, who found his way into the private office of Manager Frick on July 30, and stabbed him, is a compositor, and works on (German newspapers. He is not in any way identified with the strike, and acted entirely on his own account. He expressed regret that he had made such a bad job of it in other words, that he had not killed the man he assaulted. Frick was not at any time in danger from the wounds, and is now quite recovered. When Carnegie, who is in London, heard of the aft'air he took pains to say to the Associated Press :-— " I " havo not attended to the business for the past three years, and have implicit confidence in those managing the milla. Further I have nothing Ito say." Herr Most denies thnt he is associated with Bergman- in fact he regards him as hi* enemy.
