There was an explosion of gas this evening in the Weekly Herald oftice in Willis street, and the building was set on fire, but the staff were at work at the time, and the damage was small. A deputation of surveyors and civil engineers waited on the Premier to-day and asked him to take up the Institute of Surveyors' Bill aa a Government measure. Mr Bal lance said that he and the Minister of L mds were in favor of the Bill, but the question of makingitaGovernmcnt measure was for Cabinet to decide He would do all he could to forward the interests of the Bill. The Board of Education resolved by 4 to 3 that Mr Harrison be removed from the Beresford street school, the engagement to be terminated by three months' salary*in lieu of notice. WANGANUI, To-day. At a meeting of the Licensing Committee they granted a license to McLennan's Curtom House hotel, but refused applications from P. McLinden for Wanganui hotel, Edward Hackett for St. Johns, and Muw Siddel's for tho Prince lof Wales hotel. The extension of hours from 10 to 11 was refused for the Rut- ! land. Victoria, Provincial, Criterion, and Fosters hotels, also an application for wholesale license by J. C.
