Prohibition at Sydenham

ALL PUBLIC HOUSES CLOSED. Christchurch, today —At a meeting of tho Sydenham Licensing Committee, licenses for the throe remaining hotels were refused. Therefore after June 30th no licensed house will exist in Sydenham. The population of the borough numbers 10,800. __

The beak of the mosquito ia simply a toolbox, wherein the mosquito keeps six miniature surgical instruments in perfect working order. Two of these instruments are exact counterparts of the surgeons' lance ; one is a spear with a doublebarred head, the fourth is a needle of exquisite fineness, a saw and a pump going to make up the complement. The spear is the largest of the six tools, and is used for making the initial puncture ; next the lances or knives are brought into play to cause the blood to flow more freely. In case this last operation fails of having the desired effect, the saw and the needles are carefully and feelingly inserted in the victim's flesh. The pump, the most delicate of all six of the instruments, is used in transferring the blood to the insect's stomach. A lamp may be lighted with a piece of ice. A small piece of metallic potassium is laid on the wick and touched with the ice, when the water immediately produces a flame. This is due to the property of this metal to oxidise with exceeding rapidity on contact with water. This curious experiment is to be made with great caution, as, if too much of the potassium is used an explosion wil take place. A somewhat novel entertainment was given in Christchurch the other night in connection with the Bible Christian Mutual Improvement Association. The novel feature lay in the fact that " grandfathership " was a necessary qualification to admittance to tb c list of performers.
