Fire at Palmerston North.

Palmerston North, to-day. — A disastrous fire occurred in the Square at 3 a.m. yesterday, resulting in the total loss of upwards of L4OOO. The fire broke out in the rear of the premises of Mr Montague, auctioneer, and Sorwall, cabinetmaker, aud within half an hour these were com pletely destroyed. None of the stock whs saved. The premises of Colville aud Derrington. saddlers, were gutted, and those of Salmon, tailor, partly so. The stock from the two last was saved, but greatly damaged by removal and the rain which was falling at the time. The stock of Cook, cabinetmaker, Olson, tailor, Wickett and Co , drapers, in the block, was also removed and suffered damage in the same way. The Bank of New Zealand had a narrow escape, being considerably scorched.
