Major Tuke, who has hitherto occupier the position of R.M. at Opunake is about t( be transferred to Mongonui, north of Auc-k land, as it has been found there that an ex periment tried for the last year or two, that only having two Magistrates in the countr} north of Auckland does not fully meet tht requirements of the settlers. Mr Stewart, of the Stamps and Deeds Department, wil] be appointed Resident Magistrate for Taranaki district, and he and District Judge Kettle will perform between them the work hitherto done by Major Tuke. A man named J. C. Todd, a saloon passenger, died suddenly on board the Takapnna during the voyage from Onehunga. He appeared to be in very indifferent health when lie joined the steamer. Mr Carroll will be sworn into the Ministry to-day. Mr Carroll, M.H.R., will probably visit the scene of the fever outbreak in the Bay of Plenty on behalf of Government. The annual meeting of the Public Service Association was held last night. Mr J. E. FitzGerald, in thanking the members for electing him president, delivered an address on matters connected with the Civil Service, pointing out in what directions the status of the Service could be improved. Frank Haynes committed suicide by fixing a rifle so that a candle should burn through the string and release the trigger. He took chloroform, and the apparatus working, the top of his head was blown off. The body was not found for a week. At the Suprene Court, Smith, a plumber, sued Gleeson, proprietor of the City Hotel, for £1000 for alleged assault. Plaintiff went t3 collect an account, and Gleeson knocked him down some steps breaking his leg. A verdict was given for plaintiff for £250 and costs. HOKITIKA, To-day. W.H. Nelley, assistant County Clerk, on charges of forgery, larceny, and embezzlement, pleaded guilty, and received a sentence of 18 months. O'Brien sued the Inangahua County Council for .4500 general and £50 special damages through a culvert breaking. The first claim ■was for lost child, but the Judge struck it •ut as against Lord Campbell's Act. A verdict was given for £32 special damages. THAMES, To-pay. The Minister of Lands arrived here yesterday. The chief object of the visit relates to the Piako swamp, a portion of which was lately acquired by the Government, and to enquire into the system of drainage long advocated by Graham, of Hamilton. Unfortunately no river steamers are available, and the trip had to be abandoned. In answer to a deputation, the Minister said Government could not entertain the idea of re-enacting the Crown and Native Land Rating Act, but where there were Crown lands °for settlement assistance would be given local bodies to make roads, etc.
