Political Libel Action,
a G. HUTCHISON V. JOHN BALLANCE. * s Welltnoton, to-day.— The Premier has * s filed a defence to the libel action instituted \> by Mr Hutchison, in which he says that r '_ plaintiff was canvassed last session in the v lobby by another member of the House for J' the purpose of asceetaining how he intended to vote upon the Payment of Members Bill, and authorised that member to place his name 7 ~ upon the card as a supporter of tlie Bill ; that '" notwithstanding this Mr Hutchison spoke and voted against the second reading, and tt after the set-ion in an address to his constituents denounced it as a dishonest measure ; that defendant, addressing a mooting at , Patea, spoke to the above effeci ; and also said that Mr Smith, M.H.R., was his authority for that statement, aud he had no I doubts as to Ilr Smith's trathfuhiTTS. It is also pleaded that the publication of the words \ was lawful because they formed part of a j true and accurate report. Unless a change n of venue is applied for, the trial will take i place at Wanganui on April sth. d ■■■ ■ ■ ), The following paragraph, which appeared is in the Melbourne Argus of January 28, will c* be read with interest by all concerned c directly or indirectly in the dairy industry, . and it is to be hoped our Government r. Department of Agriculture will not lose y the opportunity of Mr Wilson's visit to i. New Zealand to afford an interchange { of views on the subject : — " Mr David ;. Wilson, the Government da:vv expert, will (I leave Melbourne for New Zealand about i>. the middle of February. During a month's c tour in that colony he will endeavor to i gather information concenri'g the system c of cheese-making adopted there. A large a export trade in cheese with the colonies and (i London is successfully carried on in New ,i Zealand. Very little attention is given to i- cheese-making by Victorian farmers, and the lx quality of the article produced here is not of s a kind likely to command a ready sale. The i visit of Mr Wilson will afford the New Zeu,a land Department of Agriculture an oppori\ tunity of ascertaining his opinions on the ,t dairying industry generally." Mr Wilson is t expected to reach Auckland early in March, i* There is a joke going the rounds of Napier, ii says the Telegraph, at the expense of a s modc-t young newspaper man iv that town, 1 which is so good tliat it oujht to be true. - The youny man in question, it appears, was 3 im I ted to a party at a residence where the c home had recently been ble.sed with an 'l addition to the family. Accompanied by his 0 be ; g'vl. he met his kind hostess at the door, v rid after the customary salutation, asked after the welfare of the baby. The lady was ii suffer: ng from a cold, which made her ••' slightly deaf, and rhe mistakenly supposed 1 that the yoir-g man was enquiring of her i cold. She replied that this was the worst I one she had ever had ; it kept her awake at b night a good deal at first, and confined her 7 to her bed. Then, noticing that the scribe c was getting pale and nervous, she said she r could tell by his looks that he was going to - have one just like hers, and she asked him 1 to go and lie down ! 1 Queen Victoria has been invited to the 3 golden weddiii3, next spring, of the King ' and Q.necn of Denmark, parents of the Princess of Wales. During the big German printing strike ' compositors in the army were sent by the ' Government to assist the employers in their hour of trouble. ;\n:ia
