[Br Telegraph.— Pbess Association.] WELLINGTON, To-day. An enquiry as to the identity of Brandy, who won the principal event at the Auckland Trotting Club meeting, is taking place here. The evidence will be extremely lengthy and will probably implicate some persons outside of racing. The rumored drowning of Thos. Spurges in the Eketahuna district has been confirmed, the body having been found this morning. The Minister of Public Works this morning met representatives from the City Council and Harbor Board in reference to tho extension of the railway to Te Aro. Matters were arranged satisfactorily, and the Minister has given instructions for the lowest tender to be accepted, and the work will proceed without delay. Several promotions have been made in the Customs Department. Among those promoted are E. R. C. Bowen, landing surveyor at Dunedin, who becomes collector at Napier; R. Carter, examining officer at Napier, becomes landing surveyor at Dunedin. NAPIER, To-day. After considerable correspondence with the proprietors of the Wolseley, Burgon and Ball, and Australian compressed air shearing machines, the committee appointed to arrange a trial on a large scale in some Hawke's Bay woolshed has abandoned the project. The Hawke's Bay County Council has passed a resolution in favor of the harbor rate being raised by a prcpDrtionafce levy on the local oodies in the same way as the funds for charitable aid are raised, to save trouble and expense. One contractor under the County Council has thrown up his contract, forfeiting his deposit. Auother had to ask for an extension of time owing to the difficulty in obtaining labor. Mrs Delisle, wife of Dr. DeLisle, had an apoplectic seizure yesterday and died without recovering consciousness. TIMARU, To-day. Holmes, licensee of a country hotel at Hilton, was convicted of burning the place down, and sentenced to four years' penal servitude. The only person in the house at the time was a man named Messon, who swore Holmes told him he had fired the hotel aud offered him £20 to say he had woke the prisoner up. The money was not pa,id and Messon split. Corroborative evidence as to Holmes financial embarraaament and previous fires was adduced. AUCKLAND, To-day. The brigantine Ryno, Captain Tribe, has bed wrecked at Flint's Island, where she went ashore during a gale. Her crew and one passenger who was also on board landed safely, and the master, mate, and steward set out in an open boat and reached Huakine, one of the Society's groups, whence they travelled to Popete. The ves_el was engaged in the guano trade.
