Borough Council.

♦ The Borough Council met last night, when there were present Mayor Townley, and Councillors Lewis, Harding, Taylor, Hepburn, Somervell, Joyce, and Whinray. Mr John Drummond wrote, forwarding the valuation roll of the Borough for the ensuing year. A circular was read from the Northern Railway League, advocating the adoption of the Stratford in preference to the central route for the North Island Main Trunk railway. The' Mayor and Crs Somervell and Whinray suggested that the League and its opponents were both wrong, as the line should come by way of Gisborne. Cr Whinray said Ministers would not even stop here to give you a chance of speaking to them much less talk about a railway. The Mayor thought they could hardly fall in with the views of the League, but should advocate the central route. The best paying line in the colony at the present time was the Napier- Wellington line, which went inland. Tlie sea-board railways did not pay. As for the Rotorua railway, the route should have been from Poverty Bay to Rotorua, passing through some of the best country. They should pass a motion that they were opposed to further expenditure on unprofitable railways, and if the money was to be spent they could suggest a more profitable line in this district. The circular was received. The Fire Inspector wrote, giving information regarding the Brigade's competition and practice. Payments were passed as follows : — Labor L 6 6s 6d, oflice expenses L 4 lis, the Council's horse Ll 3s lid, audit of accounts L4l 6s Bd, valuation L2O, insurance L 2 3s 6d. The Mayor said Mr Macintyre, Government Auditor, had stated that he had gone very carefully through the accounts, and was very pleased to find them in auch a perfect state of order. It was decided to spend some money in protection of the trees in tho Makaraka domain. The Mayor stated that a start was now being made with the Taraheru footbridge, which would be pushed on with as speedily as possible. I
