In connection with the Pahiatua poisoning case 3, the current belief in the district is that the poison wa3 contained in some cold lamb served as a diah on the day following the wedding. Samples of the articles of food partaken and alao a portion of the intestines of the victims have been brought to town for examination by the Government analyst. Twenty of the guests are still prostrated from the effects of the poiaon but are reported to be progressing favorably. The weather continues wet and stormy. In an action against John Mac Donald afc Helensville, charged with having allowed cattle to stray on the railway line, it was contended on behalf of the Railway Commissioners that their bye-laws enabled them to prosecute anyone whose cattle strayed on the railway -whether it was fenced or 'not. The bench decided that the bye-law was ultra vires and dismissed the case. A mining prospector named E. Ryan ia reported to have found a valuable deposit of manganese in the neighborhood of Russell. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The ninth annual meeting of the Educational Institute commenced to-day. There is a large attendance of delegates representing Auckland, Wellington, Taranaki, Nelson, Marlborough, South Canterbury, Otago, Waikato, and Southland. A number of visitors were also present. Among the correspondence a letter was received from the Minister of Education stating that L6O had been voted towards the expenses of the meeting of the Institute. The President (Mr I G. S. Scott) delivered his inaugural address, in which he welcomed the visitors from the other parts of the colony. He referred to the progress of the Institute, and said it was satisfactory to note that many ofthe sug ? gestions made were carried into effect. He urged the necessity of regular attendance of Ichiklren, which in country schools was most defective. He hoped compulsory attendance would be enforced.
