Poverty Bay Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE. MONDAY, JANUARY 2, 1892. THE GISBORNE SCHOOL.
This day week the time will expire for receiving applications for the position of head- master of the Gisborno school. For «i similar vacancy at Napier there were no less than fifty-seven applicants, and from this it may be anticipated that the applicants for the local appointment will be numerous. The Gisborne school is one of the largest in the colony outside the provincial centres, and it ifi also in an education district in which the scale of remuneration for teaohers is above the average pr the cojopy, The bpad'rnw^rehip rf

For many years past, it came out first in tho examinations, and Mr Morgan leaves it with that efficiency undiminished. The or^anisa- , tion is excellent, and the staff exceedingly J capable. The success of the school reflects great credit upon the community i as well as upon the teachers, for the con- , tinued good results could not have been i attained had the instructors labored amongst a population who were not , deeply solicitous for the education of the boys and girls who are grosving up in their midst. In saying , this, we do not detract from the wellearned credit of the teachers, for all , experienced teachers will tell you that it is a most difficult matter to obtain satisfactory results in districts in which parents are apathetic as to the education , of their children. Anyone entering upon charge of the Gisborno school will have no occasion to fear that surrounding circum stances may militateagainst his success as a teacher. The shinding.of the local school, as well as the remuneration, renders the position of Headm-ister of the Gisborne school a most attractive one, and many good men are certain to apply. We understand that Mr H. Bull, the present second master, intends to apply for the principal position. Mr Bull has been employed at the Gisborne School for the past twelve years, and previously was engaged in similar work in Victoria and in Southland. His educational qualifications are good, and he has had a large experience, but above all his long career of success !• the service of the Hawke's Bay Education Board entitle him to be included by that body in the nominations to the School Committee. It was he who prepared tke pupils who year after year almost swept the board in the scholarship examinations. In personal character, no man stands higher than Mr Bull, and thaj; is an element which can Mot be overlooked in an appointment of this kind. Should tho mantle of Mr Morgan eventually fall on his capable lieutenant, the people of Gisborno will have every confidence that the efficiency «f an institution in which they take greafc pride will be maintained.
