Shortland, solicitor, who was charged with slander last week,- brought an action of criminal libel against' the plaintiff in that action, based on a letter sent him, which he said was in the defendant's handwriting. He offered no proof, and the Bench said they were of a different opiuion to him, the writing being quite different to the specimen of defendant's pub in. The oase was dismissed. Sailed : Barque Evie Reed for New York. Edward Isaacs, a very old Victorian and Auckland merchant, died this morning, aged 79. He arrived in Victoria in 1842, and Auckland in 1864, founding here the well-known tirm of E. &A. Isaacs. One daughter is the wife of Sir Sa"ul Samuel, the Agent-general for New South Wales. The Harbor Board resolved, on reading the report of the Parliamentary Committee on the New Plymouth harbor loan, that ib would be extremely dangerous to establish the precedent that the State was iv any way liable to the debenture holders for local loans ; that New Plymouth had no claim to total exemption from harbor rates, but may have an equitable claim for restitution of the original securities. THAMES, To-day. A terrible accident happened at Cassell Co. 'a reduction works, Karangahaki. The foreman of the works, James Tegarfc, was leaning over a cylinder containing h very strong solution of cyanide of potassium when he overbalanced and fell in. He was quickly removed, bub died almost immediately.
