. » [Per Press Association. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, Aug. 19. News from Noumoa reports the total destruction by fire of the barque Nautilius, bound from Sydney. She was lying at anchor in Noumea, when her cargo was discovorod on fire. Tho crews of the German warships Saone and Theis endeavored to arrest tho progress of the flames, and worked for 36 hours continuously, but without avail. Finally the veanel was scuttled and run on the beach. Two of the Nautilins crew and one native were suffocated before they could be rescued, another seaman was severely burnt. The wreck and cargo were sold for nineteen thousand francs. The vessel is boliovod to be insured in the South British for LI4OO. The cargo was valued at over L2OOO, principally copper, and uninsured. MELBOURNE. Aug. 20. The amendment to the Federation Bill enabling the Governor-General to dissolve tho Senate in the same way as the Lower House was carried by 46 to 24. Mr Gillies dissented strongly, aud urged that the amendment would make federation impossible, because it would interfere with the rights of the smaller States.
