PARNELL DEFEATED.
The results of the election at Oarlow on 7th July for a successor in Parliament to the late O'Gormon Mahon was a crushing defeat for the Parnellite candidate in the disbriofc which Mr Parnell admitted was his stronghold, and where he said if he were defeated he would admit; there was nothing left in political life for him to fall back upon. Speaking at Carlo w after the election, the defeated leader said he was nofc disheartened, but would conrinuehis efforts in every Irish county and city. IrishAmericans have come to the conclusion that the Oarlow election result proves that Mr Parnell has no longer any power, and that he ought to retire from public life, During the election, Canon O'JS'eill, a supporter of Mr Parnell entered the polling booth at Ba^nalstown and voted, but was astonished tosee.his own curate instructing anti-Parnellites how to vote. He vehemently protested against the curate's action, claiming it was an attempt to intimidate the people. Had not the polioe interfered, a desperate tight would have been th» result. In the midst of the turmoil, a man tried to strike Mr Parnell, but was foiled in the attempt. Mr Parnell's followers have now lost hearb, and many of them are on the point of going over to the McCarthyites, on condition that they shall . retain their seats at the general electionMr McCarthy declines to give a pledge on the ground that the decision musfc.be left to the electors. . .-':.'
