The Borough Council meets this evening.

Messrs W. King and V. Toitjen have been elected members oil the 1\ B. Board.

The harbor-master received the following telegram this afternoon respecting the weather .-—South-east to east and north gale, jvith heavy sea and heavy rain ; glass falling.

Mr W. Adair announces the arrival of choice ball and evening costumes, and other articles valued by tho ladies.

Mr H. Lewis announces that he has in stock a large selection of dress material, suitable for ball and evening dresses, and that both ladies aud gentlemen may obtain articles of wear ao his for tho forthcoming Hussars' J5a.11.

Attention is directed to an announcement made by Messrs Pitt and Da vies regarding horses for India. The buyers' at present in the district arc offering fair prices for good Auimftls, and a good opportunity now presents itself of effecting a trade in horseflesh.

A reply has been received by Mr Grant from the Chief Secretary's department that the application to reduce the shooting licenses to 10$ cannot be complied wifch this season. The reason given is that the application should have been sent in earlier, and the ordinance having been signed by the Government cannot now be altered. It is quite two months ago since the request was sent to Wellington. The license fee will thus have to rosmuu at LI, as fornv-rly, for the present season.

Walter Jennings was charged afc (hp Police Court this morning with drunkenness. He s.\id he considered himself capable of walking. Constables Pardy and Law both gave evidence that accused bad been incapable, and had to be carried to the gaol. Accused said ho could not have been drunk as he went to the school committee meeting, and had only three drinks afterwards. Constable Law said he had been drinking for the past fortnight. Accused was fined 10s or 24 hours. He paid the money.

Amongst many others the retrenchment scheme of the Government has involved the dismissal of Mr R. K. Simpson, sheepinspector for Rangitikei, to whom the Wellington Press says :— The new Chief Inspector of the department, Mr Eitchie, might go to schoo 1 and profit largely j Mr J. H. Elliott, Under-Spcretary of Lands, " because he is not in sympathy with Ministers' village settlement policy," so the dismissal is justified ; Colonel Stapp, of Wanganui ; Mr A. Marshall and Mr McGouu, Land Office, Dnnedin ; and tho following four stock inspectors in the Otago district :— Messrs T. J. Miles (Lawrence), J. M'Kcllar (Invcrcargill); J. M. Soott (Quecustown), and H. Hull (Thornbary).

j The trades unionists at Chrxstchurch havo issued lists of candidates whom thoy wish all unioniita to support in the city and subuvb^n school committee elections. The reason allegad for this action is that they h&vo been discourteously treated by Rome of the Boards of Education, t.n'l can o»ly aot upon the Boud3 by the committees which elect them A large number of gentlemen met together last evening in the Catholic Church Sunday* school in honor of tho Rev Father Kehoe's fiftieth birthday. A most enjoyable musical evening waa spent, during which Mi 1 W. J l . Crawford, in a speech very complimentary to Father Kohoe, proposed the health of that gentleman, whi-h was very heartily reBpondcd to by those present. Toasts, co'.ipied with the names of tho Rev Father Costello and the St. Patrick's Sports Committee, were also proposed and responded to. The assemblage broke up ab un early hour this morning, after a social gathering which will ho long and kindly remembered by those who had the pleasure of partaking of Father Kehoe's hospitality.

The Ota go Daily Times correspondent writes from Wellington ;— Everybody feels (lie cases of Messrs Fox and Stevens to be hard. Each has only a few months 16 serve to become entitled to the pension due as the reward of 30 years admittedly good and faithful service, yet in ordr-r to deprivo these gentlemen of their well-earned pensions thny aro to be discharged just before their pensions become due. Everyone feels that this fort of economy is a public di grace and dishonor. I hear Ministers profess to have been ignorant of the proximity of the pension date when the order was made for the dismissals? but if so, this implies very imperfect knowledge of the business in which they are acti\q with. such a free, if not reckless hand. Again, the Government are broadly charged by the Post with transferring Mr Huntly Elliott from tho headship in the Lands Department to that of Mines in order that Parliament may refuse to vote his salary, and so get rid of him without obloquy resting on Ministers, as Mr Elliott, though admittedly an admirable officer in the Lands Department, is confessedly not an expert in mining affairs, so it h thought Parliament, with a little judicious prompting, will object to pay LSOO or LGOO for a liew office held by a non-expert
