The Opotiki Libel Cases.
Auckland, to-day. In the libel charge preferred by Mr Wyatt, formerly school teacher at Opotiki, against the Rev. T. J. Willis, Anglican minister there, the jury returned a verdiot of "Not Guilty." In the case of Stewart Bates, found guilty of libelling the Rev. Wills, his Honor ordered Bates to enter into his own recognizances and come up for sentence when called upon
In an avtiole in a London journal headed • The Passing Away of Friends' the writer ' says:— "Mr Gladstone never commiserates anybody ; he seems to think that if 1 a man works well through his day, and ( goes to rest, he has to bo congratulated, 1 and not pitied. He never onco sighs over the past ; the dead are dead, and that is all. To him it is necessary that he should forget sorrow and work on steadily; while an abstract reflection or regret is, in f his eyes, waste of time. He is so busy s from early morning till night that he has c no time to remembev the loat ones with s grief. If he did take to brooding, having * been intimate with every man of mark in « Britain for half a century, he would dwell ' : in a dolorous land, peopled by wild and ° bewildering cohorts of spectres."
