At about ten o'clock last night Detectives Campbell and Herbert raided a place of business in Willis street which for a long time has been supposed to be the resort of gamblers. By a piece of strategy the detectives managed to gain, admittance at the first door, but as soon as the doorkeeper saw ho had been *' had " ho touched an electric bell which ruvo a signal in tho gambling room and all the lights were extinguished, and there was a general rush to get outside. A dice box thickly padded was found in the gambling room, bub a very sm;ill amount of cash was collected, and as it was mostly in small silvor pieces it; is supposed the game being played was " hazard." There was also a largo table in the room, with long forms on each side, which would accommodate about 40 persons. Between 20 and 30 men of the spieler class wero in the room, bub only the names of 14 were obtained, and they will be summoned together with the proprietor of the house. Later. The police have laid an information against Chas. Cress, proprietor of the shop j on which they raided last night, charging him v.ith peeping a common gaining house.
