c—:e — : At the County Council meeting yesterday afternoon the following businoss was transacted : — Amongst the payments was an item M. Boland LIO, tinal payment on a contract whicli was 100 days over time allowed, incurring a penalty of Ll por day. The Engineer s_iid it had been impossible for the contractor to get to the work over a sea of mud. Tho item was passed. The Chairman proposed that a rate of |d in the £ be' struck. — Cr King opposed as far as the Gisborne riding was concerned, as It had already struck a rate of -id. — Cr McPhail proposed that the rate be -Jd all over the country. — The Chairman said he would like to have only a -|d rato, but the overdraft was so enormous, LSOOO. The -kl rate would bring in L4IOO, and the administration interest and charitablo aid board would be L2OOO ; at a -Jd rate they would simply increase their overdraft. — Cr McPhail asked why couldn't they reduce their charitable aid grant. — Cr Orr said they had been going back fast with the Ad rate for several years. — Cr Murphy proposed that a id be struck in the middle riding and Tologa riding, and fd in the other ridings. The other districts had big overdrafts, the Waimata for instance. Cr King seconded Or Murphy's proposition.— Cr Orr thought if the other districts could do with a $d rato the Waikohu should have only asd rate.— The | Chairman then moved tho original motion that the rato be $d in the £ over all the ridings, and this was seconded by Cr j Orr. — Cr McPhail proposed that a general rato of kl in the £be struck. There was no seconder.— The Chairman's motion was put and carried, Crs Clark, Orr, and McPhail voting for, and Crs Murphy and King against. It was agreed to go on with no other work in the Waiapu riding. Cr Orr asked for L 4 or L 5 to be spent on the Ormond- Waiapu road, which was in a very bad state. — Granted. Cr Murphy said there was L2OQ voted by Government to make a road to Mangitaikarau and tliis was being expended by the Survey Department. Had they a right as ratepayers to see the specifications? By and by they would be told Government had made them a present of L3OO or L4OO worth of road. — Agreed to write to Minister of Lands asking for information.
The Petono Borough Council have decided to raise a loan of L 20.000 for drain age and water supply. Cannibalism prevails to a horrible extent in the Congo. Women and children are frequently sacrificed.
