Cafe Chamant drew largely afc the Theatre Royal last evening. As predicted yesterday, the attendance ab tha Bazaar was considerable despite the unpropitious weathei 1 . A largo number of sales were made, and the funds of the Suud.iy School buildinsr fund will be considerably augmented. The Cife Ohautaiit performances were located on the st-iye and drew full houses each time. The audieuee were made comfjrtablu on the stage, and whilst a clever band of amateurs provided vocal and instrumental entertainment a bevy of young ladies purveyed various kinds oi light refresh menis. The following were the different items of tho entertainment: — Overture (pianoforte), Miss Duckworth ; duet, Mr Watson (banjo) and Mrs H. Williams (piano); song, Mr Langford ; scene from "Out of the Hurly-Burly," in which tho following were the performers : - Mi.sa Watson as Mrs Smith, Miss Palairet as the widow, Mr J. Bourke (showman), Mr Crawford (Colonel Banjn), Mr Mann (Vlr Slimmer), Mr F>dairet'(Mr McGlue), Mr H. Watson (Bartholemew), Mr D. Bourko (McFadden) and Mr Gilmore as sheriff ; overture, Miss Campbell ; luet, 'rinjo.-uid piano ; song, Miss Holroy.l ; Professor Quackentoss' performance by Mr U. Lysuar ; duet, Mrs A'kroy.l -uicl Mr Lui.s/ford; overture, Miss D.ick.vorth ; sonn;, "Listen to my tale of Woe," Mrs Sun lurland ; solo, Rev. H. Williams ; song, Mrs Williams ; repetition of Hurly Burly scene. This programme was divided in o three parts, each performance lasting twenty minutes. At the various stalls a large number of articles were disposed of, and the Christmas treo did big business. This evening the doors will open at 7 o'clock and the performance of tableaux picture songs will commence at 8 o'clock. The entertainment will be exceedingly pretty both as regards spectacular and musical effect. Four handsome tableaux will be presented, as follows: — "Hymn of the Moravian Nuns," with procession, in -which Miss Langfnrd will act as Mother Superintendent and the Sisters of Mercy will be Misses Gould, Palairet, Hyett, Parnell, Taylor, Wyllie, and Beere, and Mrs Parris. "Summer Shower " tableaux will be performed l>3' Mrs Sundcrlaud, Misses Druminond (2), and Mr O. Brown. " A Damsel fair was sinking " (three scenes) will be taken by Miss Gould, and Messrs Bourko, Mouatt, and Langford. " Maids of Lee " (two scenes) Misses Staito, Gould, and Palairet. Solr.s and duets will be rendered by Mies Schultz, Mesdames Henderson and Jex Blnke, and Messrs Mitchell, Grant, and Watson. This afternoon the bnzuiu' was well patronised and a fair amount of trado whs done, though the ladies of the flower and lullie stalls were somewhat idle. One of the items for sale is a valuable St. Bernard pup, whose mother is Floss, tho winner of first prize at the last Wellington show and at the last two Christchurch shoWS. ""«";£! The Garrison Band will be in attendance and perform during the evening.

The courts have decided that Mr Pritohard Morgan, M.P., must pay a thirtieth of the value of the gold obtained from his Welsh gold mines to the Crown as royalties. A pleasure camp in Canada was swept away by a cyclone. So sudden was the disaster that eight yachts while competing in a raco were capsized, the crews being thrown into the water. A new law is about to be rigorously enforced in New York prohibiting boys under 16 years from smoking in the streets or other public places. Ten acres of ground, including a portion of a graveyard, were blown up by an explosion of natural gas in Indiana. Bodies were torn from their graves and hurled into the air. The N.Z. Times learns that Mr Moore, of the Union Bank, it is understood, after deliberation, declined tho offer made him by tho Bank of New Zealand for the position of General Manager for the Colony. Tho French Government have decided to impose a tax of 2s lOd upon each passenger from Dover who lands for n few hours at either Calais or Boulogne. The English railway companies declined to issue the daily tickets, which would have to include the tax. The tax has ainco been reduced by one-half. As Lord Folkestone did nob see his way to marry on LBOO a year, his father, the Earl of Radnor, has obtained permission from, the Courts to sell for L 55,000, to the National Gallery, family heirlooms consisting of three pictures by Holbein, Velasquez, and Moroni. A cheque dratvn by the Great Indiin Peninsula Railway Company on the London and County Bank whs for L 1,250.000., 250. 000. The biggest cheque over known iy said to be framed and hanging in the offices of the Manchester Ship Canal Company. It is for L 1,700,000. A steamer recently arrived at Marseilles from Buenos Ayres with 1200 returning emigrants on board. These people, who were induced to leave France, Italy, and Germany for the Argontine Republic on account of the reported fertility and prosperity of that country, return in a destitute and despairing condition. They declare that it was impossible for them to find employment and that the land is all taken up or held at high prices, except in remote districts, where it is as yet valueless. They would have starved had they remained longer in the country. The following is the statement of tho "father of the New Zealand turf" (Mr Henry Redwood) who was recently compelled to seek the protection of the Bankruptcy Court. The story is unfortunatoly a too common one with many of the old settlers of New Zealand, and in tho case of " Tho Admiral " it is particularly hard. The debtor, in hie sworn statement, said that he had farmed for five years some 450 acres, .but the prices obtained for grain were so low as to prove utterly unremunorative. He also bred thoroughbred horseH for sale, and the fall that took place in the value of these stock involved him in difficulties that led to his obtaining an overdraft from the National Bank, which was called in on short notice, with the result that immense sacrifices were made. Subsequently a portion of the thoroughbred Btud was placed at his disposal, and he devoted his energies to training the best of the animals iov the turf. Tho misfortunes that have attended his efforts year after year through accidents to some of the most promising animals the colony Ims ever produced, and the keen and combined opposition encountered in tho fiel<l, together with bad debts arising from the stele of stock and other losses conlingent on the depresst'-d state of the colony, led tip to bis present position.
