[Per Pres3 Association, J WELLINGTON, To-day. The ship Janet Court has arrived here. The captain of the vessel reports that on February 9th in lat. 48 S long. 164 30 Ean albatross was caught. The following message was placed in a quill : — " All well ; posted by an albatross. Ship Janet Court, Glasgow," and tied to the bird which was set free again. The bird was caught and the message taken from it when about 150 miles off Snares by the barque Jasper, which arrived at Dunedin on Saturday last. Mr Bkir, of the Public Works Department, who returned from Westport in the s.s. Carntoul, which brought 2081 tons of coal, the largest cargo ever taken out of the port, speaks in high terms of the state of the harbor works. He says the steamer drawing 17 feet only took 16 minutes from the wharf to cross the bar, which she did without the slightest difficulty. Next trip she will bring 2300 td»s. It will be proposed that the extension of the works be entrusted to Wilkie Bros, whose present contract is nearly finished, as it is deemed inadvisable to, change the the contractors at this stage. The cricket match New South Welshmen v. Wellington commenced this morning. There is favorable weather. The home team went in first. AUCKLAND, To-day. News received from Kaipara states that the barque Splendid, which went ashore at Port Albert last week, is a total wreck, the vessel being hopelessly damaged. The whole of the starboard side of the barque has given way and caved in. Yesterday Judge Conolly left to hold a Court at Gisborne, which is now included in the Northern Judicial District. At the suggestion of a large number of petitions the Bay of Islands County Council has resolved to ask Government to at once open a road from Tinmarere railway station near Kawakawa to Puhipuhi silver mines. i A quantity of rich stone has been brought to Whangerei from Puhipuhi by Mr Simpson, a surveyor, who has just completed a survey of the Prospectors' 60 acres mining lease. A telegram states that since the stone was brought in shai'es in the Prospector' claimhave considerably increased in price. One settler quoted a number at £6 and a few more in the market stand at LlO each, though so far with no buyers. CRRISTCHURCH, To-day. The n^issing man from the Rotorua is believed to be Edward, son of Richard Wright, of Makikihi. About two years ago he had a sun stroke, and since has been wandering in his mind.
