The Colony's Jublle .
Wellington, to-day. ! Tho following proclamation has been issued fro n the Colonial Secretaiy's office : -Wednorlny, 29th in*.':, being the i fiftieth anniversary of f'.a establishment of" the colony, His Ex^ellonc/ the Governor has been phased to direct that the^ day shall bo observed as a general holiday, on which occasion public offices throughout the colony will be closed. The Wellington Post of a recent date says :—-We understand that the Gazette will contain a proclamation declaring the 29th inst. a public holiday throughout the colony. This is, of course, in accordance mt.hoflicialprcccdents, butitisneverbheloss very absurd that the anniversary of the arrival of v half-pay naval captain at Kororareka, as Consul Geneva!, accredited to tho sovereign chiefs of New Zealand, should be celebrated as marking the establishment of the Colony of New Zealand. Next session we hope the matter will be put right by legislation. Wednesday, the 22nd instant, is to be observed as a public holiday in Wellington. According to the Government, therefore, Wellington is seven days older than the colony. Whatever the rest of the colony may do, Wellington will not, so far as the public are concerned, take the slightest notice of the bogus holiday on the 29th January.
