From a private letter received from the '• Chatham Islands we (N.Z. Times) learn that the dog tax difficulty, which recently necessitated the assistance of extra constables, has not yet been settled. The ringleaders among the natives who refused to pay the tax were sent to Lyttelton, and paid up when they got there. The other natives, however, still decline to ' part,' anjl the Government will have to send a fresh force "down to the islands, if they .want to collect the tax. The Christmas holidays were celebrated with due ceremony and festivity on the Islands. -; •\;A. somewhat clever trick has been practised on some of the philanthropically disposed individuals in Auckland. The mode - ' dfiprocedure is as follows : — A letter is : written to some well known charitably disposed person, to the effect that the writer is in. very distressed circumstances. He does not ask for money, but simply assistance to earn an honest living. All he wants is a guarantee given to some firm in order that he may be supplied with goods which he might sell and thus earn his living. This sounds so fair that in several instances the sum of LI has been guaranteed. The applicant then gets the goods at wholesale prices, sells them for whatever he can get, and the person who guaranteed the money is in the end called . upon to pay it. More than one person Jias been thus victimised. A good deal of indignation has been expressed in Auckland in regard to the refusal to permit, the Volunteers to take part in the jubilee celebration and fire a salute. It has been suggested that the salute should be given from the Russian guns in Albert Park, which belong to the . Council. This would, however, be attended with some danger, owing to the age ot the guns, which are trophies of the fall of Sevastopol. The Maoris of the Waikatopropose that 30 girls shall perform the maidens' dance during the jubilee festivities. This is a very beautiful dance, and is considered amongst the Maoris to be the most appropriate for women. The Maoris are taking great interest in the approaching celebration.
