Both of these noblemen fell victims to influenza, aggravated in Lord Cairns' case by pneumonia. Mr Garner has secured the Australian rights, on behalf of the "Triumvirate," to Gilbert and Sullivan's now opera " The Gondolier." Jan. 15. Evidence in support of this plea is now being tendered by the defence. News by the mail steamer from Rio de Janiero states that in the revolutionary rising at that place in December last, one hundred persons were killed and twenty one executed. It is announced that the daughter of an English clergyman, at present an inmate of a convent in Rome, will proceed to Molakar to take up the work of the late Father Damien. The application for new trial made by the counsel for tho condemned men on the charge of the murder of Dr Cronin has been refused except in the case of Kuuge, who received a sentence of three years' penal servitude. | A tornado swept the town of Clinton, Kentucky, and demolished fifty -five houses.
