ON DIC OU NT!

Sir,-- We now have the addresses of both candidates before us and also the remarks of the proposer and seconder of both The speeches of both candidates roan well. To sum up the candidates the address of Mr Roes is all what lie will do if elected ; the address of Mr Arthur is full of what might be done, but little proposition of what he himself will do if elected. Now, the doctors must just take the two speeches and judge from them which contains the attainable and the unattainable. But, sir, the speech of the period is the short one made by Mr DeLautour, and in order to give his remarks their due importance, allow me to remind the electors of another speech Mr DeLautour made on one of the many (0casions when we met to discuss the harbor scheme in public. At the meeting we held to consider changing the site of the breakwater Mr DeLautour made the remark that the harbor would be all right, because if we were nob successful in getting into deep water ships would be built to suit our harbor, no matter what mess we made in our endeavor to improve the harbor. Mr DeLautour was laughed at for such a silly remark. But, sir, Mr DeLautour was right in what he stated, for at the present time ships have been constructed on purpose to suit our harbor. Have we not the powerful twin screw steamship Tuna, now in harbor, and a most useful and handy craft she is too. I just refer to this to show that Mr DeLautour thinks before he allows the words to leave him. Such being the case, I now refer to Mr DeLautour's speech in seconding Mr Rees at the meeting. Mr DeLautour said then that ho knew Mr Rees better than Mr Roes know himself, and on that account lie must discount him a good deal. How much he would discount Mr Rees he did not say, but as he was speaking I thought I saw 00 per cent, pass through Mr DeLautour's mind. Well, Sir, if at the instance of the seconder, Mr Rees is to be discounted 90 per cent, I say to the electors think well over the remainipg 10 per cent and then they will not be far out. But let us put this discount to the test. Less than two years aero Mr Rees stated that if he could only get to England he could so induce a constant stream of settlers to this district that we would out-grow all the rest of the colony. Mr Rees has been to England and returned : where are the settlers ? Answer echoes nil.

Discount Mr Rees on English settlement by 100 per cent., and we have him at his value, according to Mr DeLautour'n estimate. Sir, this is the first time I have met with a candidate who is held up for discount by his seconder. Is it not a fact thatwhenMrDeLautuururged the electors to return Mr McDonald, the chief merit of Mr McDonald was that he would be a worker and not a talker, for talkers were a perfect nuisance in the House. We now find the same gentleman urging tho claim of Mr Rees chiefly on account of great oratorical powers. Verily the weather cock and the church steeple are upside down — gone clean round. Think of tin's electors. — lain, Arc. No Discorxr.
