. Stanley, writing to the Emm Bey Relief Committee, says that after waiting nt Navallai 44 days to enable Selim, Einui Bey's chief Lciutenant, to rally the remainder of the refugees from Wadelai, lie began to fear that Selim was secretly assembling a force of 700 rebel .soldiers with the object of seizing his ammunition. He therefore decided to start on the 10th April. In consequence of the morbid indecision of Emm Bey and Cavati to leave Kailakni Stanley says he was compelled virtually to coerce their followers to march. Two days later Stanley was taken ill and a halt was made, and it was not until the eighth of May that another start was made, although Selim tried hard for a further delay. Proof of Si-lim's treachery was afterwards discovered, when Stanley ascertained that the officers of the Egyptian troops in his camp, who had accompanied Emm Bey from Duil'inla, were comspiring with Selim. After the second start of Kavallai a straight course was tr ivelled to Lake Yictoria-Nyanza. The party suffered severely from fevers and the incessant conflicts with the Wavausaras. During the mouth of July alone, 141 of the party were dead and missing. Stanley describes Seinliki as a splendid river, and lie was able to ascertain that Mount Ruwezori is a snow-clad extinct volcano, 1900 feet in height. He also discovered that Lake Albert Edward Nyanza was on the Nile Basin. The party encamped at Uzinja on the 17th of August. Stanley expresses great indignation that only 600, instead of 10,000, left Wadelais, and blames Emm Bey for not acting with greater promptitude. Stanley, it is expected, will reach England about the end of January.
