STANLEY'S MARCH
TERRIBLE PRIVATIONS

A dcspatcli has been received from Stanley, dated Kaffuro, August sth, 1889, in which his journey to the relief of Emm Bey is discribed. Stanley says that after rescuing the remnant of his rear column he started for the rendezvous a^ Khavalli, and met with terrible privation 8 on the journey. His following were deer mated by small pox, and for eight day s the party \vere in a state of absolute starvation. Twenty-one died before they reached one of their forts. After resting at the fort the march to Ivavalli was renewed, and that place was reached on the 19th January. Here a letter from Jephson awaited him, which confirmed the news he had received at Lake Albert Nyanza that Emm's troops at thu instigation of the officers at Dimfauill hail revolted a month previous, that Emm Bey had been made a close prisoner, but had subsequently been rescued. In the conflict 1,500 Mahdists had been captured, and the rebels, seized with panic, fied, and many of their officers were killed. Jephson stated that Emm Bey was undecided as to whether be should return, and to this Stanley returned an answer that he should return at once, and intimated he could not wait long. Jephson reached Karilli on February Oth, Emm Bey arriving a week later. A private letter from Stanley states that on the return journey he lay at the point of deatli for twenty-eight days.
