Betting and Suicide.

A jian named J. J. Annan, 27 years of a^e, shot himself in the head with a revolver at the Brisbane Metropolitan Hotel on November b. There is no hope of his recovery. It appears that he lost heavily in betting lately, and this had preyed on his mind. Ho told a friend the previous day that he had lost L 176 on the Melbourne Cup, and there is Mttle doubt from the letters he left that he had made up his mind to commit suicide because he was unable to pay up. Several bookmakers called at the hotel inquiring for him just at the moment the shot was tired. Annan was a native of Scotland, and was an educated and gentlemanly young man. fie arrived in Queensland about five years ago, and went to Mnckay, where he made a considerable sum of money. Afterwards he took a trip home, returning a few months ago. He has since been residing at the Metropolitan Hotel.

Letters for Friendly Islands, Samoa, and Raratouga may be posted up to 7 p.m. tonight, and will catch the Richmond, which sails from Auckland on Tuesday next.
