Frozen Meat Market.

L Messrs Nelson Bros report from London p under date October 4th : — The demand at r this time of the year is generally more or ' leas restricted, and certainly fche trade ' during the past four weeks has proved no t exception to the rule. Supplies of all kinds of mutton have been large ; but as regards beef, shipments from America have been irregular, and values consequently have fluctuated considerably. ! New Zealand Mutton. — It was generally ■ anticipated that on the termination of the Dock Strike the meat would be offered freely, and that lower prices might be anticipated, and such has certainly proved to be correct, as values at the date of our last issue were ;">|d for " best," but have gradually fallen to say 4fd per lb. The last few shipments have been more split up than usual amongst many consignees, which no doubt has had something to do with the decline. Fiozen Lamb. — The demand is practically over for this class of meat. Small supplies offering on the market have made s|d to 6|d per lb. "Sydney sheep.— The quality of the last two or three shipments finds favor with many buyers, and sells readily at from 4gd to 4kl per lb. River "Plate sheep.— Shipments from South America have proved to be considerably less than were some time ago anticipated, difficulty having arisen in obtaining suitable sheep for shipment. Supplies have been hardly equal to the demand, and prices consequently have been fairly well maintained. Fiozen beef. — There has been a good demand for this staple, especially for fore quarters, sales having been made up to 4kl per lb. Hind quarters, when the American chilled was so short, touched 5d per lb, but prices have since declined to 3|d forea, and 4|d for hinds. The " Ashleigh Brook," which arrived on the 23rd ult., brought the first shipment of frozen beef from Rockhampton, consisting of s®me 6,000 hind quarters. The quality of the meat appears to be very fair, and the condition good. So far it has been selling at from 4]d to 4f d per lb. The stock of IN ew Zealand mutton compares favorably with the quantity on hand last year ; and, as " afloats " are moderate, the statistical position appears to be satisfactory. A Baby Show was held in Sydney at the end of last month, in which the promoters, according to the local papers, do not appear to have carried out their engagements. The wind up of the aftair^ is thus described in the Sydney Evening News of the 29th ult :— " It is said that the promoters of the Baby Show had a very lively few minutes just prior to the closing on Saturday night. Some 360 ten-der-hearted mothers were exceedingly wrath because they did not, they assert, receive the attention promised by the promoters of the show ; were inoonvenienced ; and did not receive the consideration promised, after attending the show for four days. They approached several of the officials in a most menacing manner ; but these gentlemen were equal to the emergency, and the lights were immediately extinguished. A scene of wild confusion followed ; but the enraged dames were foiled, and could do nothing more than grope their way from the building in the dark, at the same time muttering expressions of supreme disgust upon the management individually and and the show as a whole. A rumor was current on Sunday that Mr John Soloman had been picked up in small pieces, but it lacks continuation." Tlie s.s. Te Anau arrived in the Bay from Auckland and Sydney at 3 this afternoon. She goes ou to Southern ports and Melbourne, this evening. Last boat leaves at fc>
