t say that, with his long anrl intimatP knowi ledge of the colonies, lie is a very valuable • addition to the board. We have lately had • the pleasure of welcoming here our present general manager, Mr Finlayson, who is tak- : ing a well-earned holiday after eleven years' i continuous work in the service of the bank. ■ We have naturally taken advantage of his ■ presence to discuss with him very fully the ! general affairs of the bank. Our interviews , have been of a very agreeable character, and it is most satisfactory to feel that the bank's interests in the colonies are under such able : control. Daring his absence the general i management is in the hands of Mr F. M. :' I tines, in whose ability and judgment your ! directors have every confidence. To him ■ and Mr Palmer, the chief olh'cer in New Zeai land, us well as to the stuff generally in the j colonies, our best thanks are due for their zeal and attention to the interests of this institution. W T e are likewise greatly indebted to our friend Mr Mewburn and to Mr 1 Carbery, the assistant-manager, as also to i the other superior officers and the staff in i London, who one and all have, as usual, ren- • dered excellent service. I will conclude by i formally moving that the report and state- j , ment of accounts be adopted. (Applause.) Mr Botly seconded the resolution and expressed the opinion that the report presented was the most satisfactory one that ! had ever been laid before the shareholders. 1 The views of the Chairman, corroborated as '! they were by recent telegraphic advices, indicated the continued prosperity that was taking place in the colonies. Of the vast amount of money emp'oyed in the colonies, no leas than one tenth of the whole amount was employed in bunking, and they could therefore take credit to themselves that, by supplying capital for the development of the resources of the colonies, they had done much to advance the prosperity of the colonies, and to provide a place where the youth of this country could profitably employ its energies, and where our plethora of capital could be employed at remunerative interest. Mr Wood said that he presumed that the increased profit did not arise from any increased valuation of the bank's premises. The Chairman said : No ; certainly not. The resolution was then put and unanimously carried. The Chairman moved the election of Mr J. F. M'Mullen as a director of the bank, in the room of Mr E. P. W. Miles, deceased, I and Riiul : It is quite unnecessary for me to I say anything in moving this, especially after the gratifying manner in which Mr M'Mullen's name has been received by the meeting. The resolution was then put und carried. The following resolutions were also proposed and carried :--" That Mr Richard James Ashton, one of the two directors retiring by rotation, be re-elected a director of the bank." "That the Right Hon. Lord Hillingdon, one of the two directors retiring by rotation, be re-elected a director of the bank." Mr Albert Deacon, of 12, Fonchurchstreet, merchant, and Mr Frederick Wliinney, of <S, Old Jewry, chartered accountant, were then elected auditors of the bank for ' the year ending June 30, 1890, at the reinu--1 iteration of £i>oo. | A hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, ' directors, managers, and stall" of the bunk having been carried unanimously, the proceedings then terminated.
