FATAL ACCIDENT.

DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER. A fad accident occuri-ctl this morning, by which Mr William Watt, an old settler of the flay, iQ.st hjs life. T-ljc deceased w.i* driving a dray loaded with firewood at Makauri, and in front of Mr O.vcnliam's brickyard a mob of horses cuine down for water from the trough supplied by an artesian well. The mob frightened the horses in the team, and on Mr Watt jumping off lie must have slipped, and the v/heel passed over his chest. The accident occurred about 9 o'clock, and the deceased died at noon. Mr Watt, who has been a resident of the Bay for nearly forty years, bore the character of being a straightforward, honest, and industrious man. He was married to a native woman, who is still living. He also leaves a son and a daughter.
