The question of the settlement of the Now Hebrides difficulty was again alluded to in the House of Commons t<>-day, when Sir James Ferguson stated, in reply to a question, that since he had premised to 1 *y the psipsrß relating to the negotiations with France on tho subject before the Hou36, further messages had passed between the French and British Governments, and therefore for the present he would be unable to produce the papers asked for. The damages awarded to Mrs Langworthy in the breach of promise case are £20,000 and costs. Tlie Court has further ordered the payment of £500 per annum for the child. VIENNA, Aua. 11. WELLINGTON, To-dw. A young mau named David Alexander Johnstone was apprehended to-day on a charge of having obtained 14 commission from Andrew M. Loasby by the falsa pretenco that ho had obtained an order from Bannatyne and Co. for and sold to them goods to the value of £160. He was remanded. The Mayor and City Councillors paid an official visit to H.M.S. Opal to-day. The Government have not yet received conlirma'ion of the statement that the contract with the Midland Railway has ' been signed. The Penguin, which arrived from the North via the West Coast this morning, brought down from New Plymouth the Maoris Te Whotu, Tanalvi, Aha, and To Aro, who have boen sentenced to various terms of imprisonment in^conneclion with sly grog-selling and resisting the police at Paiihaka. Mr C. Whitefoord is gazetted R.M. for Akaroa. The Devonpoit Natal Aiiilleiy have been disbanded. The Corporation and other bodies intsrested intend to urge the Government to reinstalo the clock when the Post Office is rebuilt. Part of the funds wero originally supplied to the Government by the public bodies, and as tho clock was not insured ii ia considered the Government are responsible for its loss. W. R. Waters was arrested at two this afternoon. INVERCAPvGILL, To-day. Two yourg men named Arthur Harvey and Herbert Anderson, the sons of wellknown and respected ciLi.jsns, have been arrested on a charge of robbery wiih violence. They had been drinking with a sailor whom tliey decoyed into a back street, arcl while Harvey knocked him down and held him Anderson went through h'3 pockets. Harvey has been previously convicted of lerceny and let out under the Probation Act, but he violated the conditions and had to serve the remainder of his term. WANGANUI, To-day. A fancy goods dealer named Goldsmid wpt found dead in his bedroom yesterday afternoon. In a memorandum found under his head it stated that he intended to commit suicide. He had taken an overdose of a sleeping draft.
