A NEW COMET.
Last night in the South-west from the town, iv a direction over the Arai, was visible very distinctly a comet, the luminous portion a considerable distance in a slauting[direction, and was only to be seen for about two hours. The distinguished stranger was aoou out of sight. It disappeared at about 830 p.m.
The schooner (iisborne, which arrived today, reports having seen a very large meteor early this morning. It lit up the sky for fully ten minutes.
A Melbourne telegram says : — "The tail of a large comet was visible last night in the sonth-west. Ie is 3tated to be a comet of the first magnitude. It was invisible iv the northern hemisphere."
Au Auckland wire to-day says :— " A fine new comet was visible in the Southern heavens last night. There was an uniform long ray of pule li»ht, commencing at the horizon. The neuclus was apparently below the horizon."
