HARBOR REPORTS.

Wellington, to day. In view of the accident to the Oamaru breakwater the Railway and Marine authorities have been making experiments in Timaru with a view of ascertaining what becomes of the drifting shingle now stopped in progress by the breakwater there. At present it is supposed that the shingle is ground into sand and washed round tho end of the wall to be deposited in the harbor in the shape of silt, whence the necessity arises for dredging experiments, which so far go to show that there is a large quantity of sand deposited after every storm. Mr Blackett's report on the Oamaru breakwater isito be forwarded to the Board. Application was made to the Government to supply the money necessary for the repairs, the Board's funds beingexhauated, but the Government refused to do anything until one of their officers had seen it, and Mr Blaokett's report is the result. The district will have to find the money itself. The concrete blocks have been undermined in places by the action of tho sea, and havo givon way. in consequence i of tliore nob being sufficient batter on the out aide or any protection to the monoliths.
