A CHRISTCHURCH STRIKE
Christchurch, to-day. In consequence of a misunderstanding between the employ ars and employees in the boot and shoe manufactories, some 300 operatives of all branches of the trade have withdrawn from work. The men's grievances are that too many boys are employed, to the detriment of the adult bootmakers and that some men were given, piece work overtime while many others were out of work. At a conference between the Manufacturers Association and a deputation from the men it was agreed that the proportion of apprentices to journeymen should be one to four or five, and the employers recommended that a deputation of the clickers should wait on them to discuss the proportion of apprentices in that department. There is a probability of the whole difficulty being amicably settled very quickly.
