THE HEARN-HARRINGTON RACE.

Wellington, to-day. , The victory of Hearn over Harrington for the sculling championship at Riverton yeßterday, is very popular .here. The following telegram was received from Riverton yesterday afternoon : — " Harrington led at the start, but when half the distance had been covered his boat was swamped and he gave up the race, Hearn pulling leisurely home. Time, 30mins." The following telegram came in the evening : — " The Champion Sculling Match turned out a hollow affair. A punctual start was made, and the wind being rather strong and the water chopping at the start, Harrington got ahead, but by bad steering lost his advantage, and Hearn entered the narrows 50 yards ahead. Just as Hearn was leaving the narrows Harrington's boat swamped, and he gave up the race after covering a nvle and a half. . Hearn then leisurely pulled home, the time being 30 mirutes. There was the largest crowd of people that has ever been seen in Riverton, numbering fully 3000 people. An impression go- abroad that Harrington had been guilty of foul play, but those who saw the accident and know him best (including Hearn's backers) scouted the idea, and agree that the swamping was purely accidental.
