WELLINGTON, -JAis day. . Two informations for forgery' were iaid to-day against Thomas Gibson, late- Town Clerk aud Collect r for the Petone' Town Board. Gibson has disappeared from the district, and defalcations have been discovered in the books amounting to about £40.
At the Supreme Court, Rddlestpne,, for larceny, was discharged. Edith Wadsworth, for larceny, got twelve months' imprisonment. ■■'<:■•:.
WAIPAWA, this day. As Fathers Ahem and Sauzeaa were returning from Wallingford yesterday their horse shied, and they were thrown out. Father Ahem got bruised, and Father Sauzeau's leg was broken. Silvester, who attempted the murder of Mr J. L. Chalmers, Inspector of . Railways, with a revolver, has been remanded.
Driscoll, for horse-stealing, has been committed for trial. '■-< . !'>
AUCKLAND, this day. H. M. Morton and Co. have received information that the steamer Tiwan, which had a cargo for New Zealand, went aahore on the voyage from Hong Kong to Sydney, and a general average has b^ea struck on the cargo. \ The Cambridge Railway was formally opened yesterday. An attempt at incendiarism in the Auckland Market was attempted last night. Boxes of matches were strewn about 'the floor, but burnt out without firing the place. Samuel Daraney. a negro, was brought to the hospital from Mercury Bay, having cut three gashes in bis throat with a razor. He had been drinking heavily. A five-roomed house at Rocky Nook,'belonging to T. W. Doonan, has been burnt down. It was uinsured. ;
In the libel case, for defamation of character, David Moas v. 0. J. Aitken, in which the damages were claimed at £100, the Judge awarded 40s, and costs on the lower scale. The plaintiff is an insurance agent employed by the Equitable Insuranse<f(pompany of New York at Auckland. Defendant is a clerk at the Bank of Kew Zealand. The Insurance Society came to hear :of the statements, and requested plaintiff to disprove them or leave the employ of the Company.
