FIRES.
♦ i [Per Press Association.] Blenheim, this day. A four-roomed house at Pine Hill, owned and occupied by William Johnston, carpenter, was burnt down yesterday afternoon. The house was insured for £250, and the furniture for £50 in the South British. Dunedin, this day. A fire broke out in a small cottage, which had been on fire on Saturday night. This time the cottage was completely destroyed. It was occupied by a woman of ill-repute, and was in the New Zealand for Ll5O. Wanganui, this day. A fire occurred in a small cottage owned by Mr Sorenßen, and occupied by a man named Breen. The fire was cony fined to the kitchen and parlor. The house was insured in the London, Liverpool, and Lancashire Company for Ll5O, and the furniture for L 72 in the Fire Assurance Company. Wellington, this day. A fire occurred in Pirie-street at one o'clock this morning, which destroyed two cottages occupied by Messrs Hook and Duries respectively. The buildings were owned by Mr Kershaw, of Kilbirnie. The fire occurred in the kitchen of Mr Hook's house, and when discovered had a good hold. Mr Hook loses the whole of his furniture, and Mr Duries only saved a few articles. Mr Hook's furniture was insured for LBS in the National. Mr Dune was uninsured. The cottages were insured for LIOO each in the Colonial.
The Queen's Birthday was celebrated with more than usual enthusiasm by the • British colony in San Francisco, and also in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The site of the Black Hole at Calcutta has been discovered and excavated, and the excavation has been filled up and decently paved over. A handsome tablet of white" marble, bearing a suitable inscription, is about to bo placed near the spot.
