POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB.
A MKETistt of the Committee of this Club was held sit the Masonic Hotel yesterday afternoon, Mr. G. L. Sunderland prc-skling. The members of the Committee present were — Messrs. Pitt s ftloomfield, i)afaur r Westrup, Nolau, and the Secretary, Mr. C. Ferris* Messrs. Glyn, Matthewson, Newman, Montmollins, and Beresford r were ballotted for and elected. — After the election of Mr. G, J. Winter aa Chairman of Committee, and Mr. G. L. Sunderland as Vico-Chalrmau, Messrs. Mills, G. L,. .Sunderland, Westrup, Nolan, Bioomfield, i McDonald, and Dufaur were appointed 5 \ .Stewards ; Mr. C. W. Ferris, Secretary ;. \ Mr. W. F. Crawford, Judge ; andi Mr. Winter, Starter.— lt was decided; to ask Mr. Evott, of Napier, to act as Handicapper. Mr. E. K. Browu will be Clerk, of thd Scales, and Mr. A. Pritehard Starter. — The dates, of the meeting were fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan, loth and Kith, 1884, so as not to clash with other meetiugs. A very good programme was decided upon. The first day will comprise a Flying Handicap (substituted for Town Plate) of SO eovs. , |-mile ; County Stakes of 40 soys., l| miles ; Tradesmen's Handicap of 120 soys., 1J miles ; Selling Raae of 30 soys., and Hack Race erf 5 soya., the same as last year. Tho aooond day's programme will consist of six events, to comprise Hurdle Race Handicap of 80 soys. ; Hack Hurdle Handicap of 15 soys.; Publicans' Purse Handicap of 7050v8., I£ miles; HaeUßaceHandieapof lo soys., 1 mile ; Tuxanga Stakes Handi(jap of 200 soys., 3 miles ; Forced Handicap•f 25 soys n , i mile. — In consequence cf the heavy s>hai-go3 for freight, which was stated to act as a deterrent Jigainst borses being brought to the bay, the Secretary was instructed to write to tha agent of the Union Steamship Coittpauy, asking him tocommunicate with the head office, for the purpose of endeavoring to induce the management to consider the advisability of making & reduction in the freight of horses engaged for these meetings coming; from Auckland, Napier and elsewhere.. — Some other routine business having been gone through, the proceedings ftermfnated. — It wiU be seen from the stakes offered that about £700 wiU be distributed i» prizes, aud that the distances generally are shorter. The acceptances are lower than last year* and the date of meeting earlier^ With these alterations there should- be; good fields and a successful meeting..
