LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A letter li.is been received this day f~om tho Surveyor-General, stating that the aum of £2,300 has been placed to tho credit of the County Council, for the purpose of improving the road from the Patutahi flat to the Waihau Township, which is now being surveyed. The work is to be pushed on at once under the superintendence of the County Engineer. A rumour wag current yesterday that Mr, 0. B. Hubble, bricklayer, of this town, had been drowned in Napier. This morning we notice that ho returned by the M, Rotoinahaua. It is impossible to tell why guch a report was started.
Acting on instructions from tho Public Works Department Mr. Krippuer and statl' are now engnged in surveying theGiaborneWaimata road. The survey is expected to bo completed within a fortnight, and it is likely that tenders will ho culled for tho formation and cuttings about the middle of January. Tho road starts ,at the bnck of Mr. C. Gray's homestead, Waiohika, and will traverse tho block as far as tho Waimata river. a very good grade has been obtained throughout, tho heaviest portions of the work being a few side cuttings. Tho road will bo mado to a width of twelve feet clear. It is to bo hoped that as soon as the 'Waimata block is made accessible it will be placed in the market. We understand that the sections havo already been surreyed.
A meeting of members of the Poverty Bay Cricket Club is called for Tuesday evening next, to consider the" manner in which the Napier cricketers aro to be entertained, in their intended visit to Gisborue, about tho first of tho New Year. The eleven to play against the Napior team will be chosen by a Committee the same evening. It ia requested that as many of the members as can possibly attend will be at tho meeting.
Tenders are invited for certain additions to the Oisborne Public School, particulars of which may be obtained at Messrs. RatclifFo & Piesse's office.
We have received a letter on the subject of "The Settlement of the Otago Runs," written by Mr. 0. DeLautour to Mr. J. Macaiulrew, which we ahull publish in to-morrow's issue.
We are informed that tho s.s. Rotomaliana on her last trip North to Auckland had fully 450 passongers oa board. Every available cubic foot of space on deck and in the cabins was occupied.
We have been requested to stato that all the overland East Coast mails via Tologa Bay, will close to-morrow afternoon at the usual hour.
We have been requested by tho Hoir Secretary of the Waerenga-a-hika Jockey Club, to state that the weight to bo carritd in the Hack Race at the coming Boxiny Day races will be 9st.
Mr. Pope, the Inspector of Native Schools is now in Hawke's Bay, examining the native schools. He will shortly pay a visit to this district.
We are requested to draw attention to tho alteration in the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's advertisement.
The dates of tho forthcoming holidays to be observed by the bauks, are advertised in this issue.
