Engineer's Report

Sir, — I have the honor to report the completion of the contract for spreading soil on Pttlmerston-~Rnad ; and in conn< ctiou therewith, I' hqg tv recommend that the wh<>le of the formation be gone over with v sufficiently heavy '• roller," bo as to press, and render smooth, the surface, mid I have ma'ie arrangements (subject to your approval) for the work to be done, at a c >st of £2 ; also, tho portion of (Jobdeu S reet from Aberdeen to Palmerstnn Road, having been much cut up by the hoavy traffio, repairs will require to be nudu, the cost of which I estimate at £1 10*, authority for the expenditure of which I now ask f >r. Proclainwtion of Fioads —Upon enquiry at the Survey Office, I have ascertained that, in reference to the Waikanae Block, the date lias expired undur which roado cun bo taken in accordance with the Native Lands Act, and in reference to the Wiu-o-hiharore Block, the full per pent age allowed (5 per cent.) has already bnen taken, by tho extension of Stanley and Lytton Roads ; so that »ny action in reference to tho extensions of Low.* any Grey Streets must be under the Public Works Act, Step* are being taken under the above Aot. Profttsioiuil Assistance. — In accordance with resolution of the Council, I have made an estimate of the cost of completing tho town levels, sections and iimds, and the amount I would respectfully nsk for is £25. I have made arrangements with Mr. O'Ryan to assist mo at one-half the usual professional rates, as much of the office work can be done after oftioe hours. Contracts and Day Labor.— The contracts in hand ere being prooeftded with,

and the day laborers have beeu engaged as per former report. The necessary bonds and documents for the construction of a punt and the removal of tramway plant, Kaiti Beach, have been signed, and tho work for the latter h.ia been commenced. Time sheets and certificates for payment have been handed to the Town Clerk. I have, &c, John Drummond, Borough Engineer.
