This Day. The heavest sh<»ck of etrtluiuake experienced since 1808 occurred yesterday morning at 7.37. The duration was 10 seconds. It was sharp at first, the-> gentle, the undulations continuing a few second*, and winding up witli a smarter shock th;»n the first. A stone fell from the cross at the summit of the Cathedral Spire, which was somewhat disturbed from its proper position, and in consequence it will be rather awkward to repair, some of tho Cathedral bells were set ringing by the shock, and the olook at the time-ball tower was stopped. At present no particularly heavy damage is reported, but many buildings were more or less cracked. The Jockey Club has fixed the Autumn Meeting for April 10 and 11, nominations Feby. 4. A proposition was nvtde to alter the name of tho C J.C. Handicap to the New Zealand Cup, but it was not approved of.
