THE TARUHERU BRIDGE.

[To tlie Editor of the Herald. 1 Sir,— l was surprised to hear Captain Chrisp, at the entertainment given in aid of the Hospital funds, thank Mr. Roes alone f r tliu use of the bridge and portion of the Whalaupoko Block whereon sports were hold on St. Andrew's D.ty- It is a well-kn.wii f,iet that Mr B irker has possession of the Whatau-p-'ko Block, ponding the remit of the present litigation. Mr. Rees himself informed a public meeting that the New Zealand Native Land Settlement Company, Limited, had only paid a portion of the money due to the contractor (Mr. Davies) who built the bridge. While recognising Mr. Rees' desire to encourage all outdoor recreation, I think it is due to others that they should have some credit in assisting the sports taking place at Whatanpoko. Mr. Rees is one of those very accommodating and obliging gentlemen who will lend anything and everything, and borrow also. It is mainly due to Mr, Daviea' plucky enterprise that any bridge was built over the Taruheru, for which it is said he has not yet boon paid, or at any rate had not been paid or settled with up to the time of his last visit to Qisborne, a few weeks ago. It is therefore invidious for the public to think that Mr. Rees alone in to bo thanked for the use of the bridge and portion of the Whataupoko Block, aa a promenade for outdoor amusement or recreation. Yours, «fee., Observer.
