MR. GANNON'S CATHOLICITY AND CANDIDATURE.
[ To the Editor of the Herald]. Sir,— l have a few words to say in reference to two letters signed'by n Mr. M. J. Gannon," and "No. 2," in your issue of Saturday.in reply to " A Roman Catholic." Mr. Gannon instead of answering the questions put straight to him, goes round the bush, and challenges "Roman Catholic" to prove that he ever denied his Catholicity. I challenge Mr. Gannon to prove whether he has shown himself a Catholio, publicly practically, or otherwise. And I ma
state that if one were t<> look through the marriage registry or the baptismal registry. I foel pretty confident that, the namo of Gannon, cmnot be found. If he bn not a fox, ho must be a wolf clothed in sheepskin The Catholics of this electorate know him too well now to be led away by his clap-trap, and buukum. Mr. Gannon, you must abolish the idea of your co-religionists to support yon until they tee your earnestheaa in what yon profesi, and alter your narrow-minded views on education. Tho assertions of " No. 2," are ignorantly if not maliciously untrue. The education question i« not c infilling itself to Poverty Bay, but it extends to all the colony The Catholics pay j taxes for Government, and yet f hey get nothing lor the education of their children, so they must pay again for their I own schools, because their conscience forbidtthein to send their offspring tothugodless schools. Is this right ?is this justico ? Others want the Bible read in the schools, aud why not. Let every denomination ; English Church, Catholics, Presbyterian, Weslejans, Freethinkers, Mormons, etc., have their own schools, and let the Government out of the revenue of tho Colony give a proportionate share to all ; or nothing to anybody. When . tho system of the State is against the conscience of the people it becomes a tryannical system. " No. 2" is not an ultramontane, but he is a true rabid ultramontane If he had rend the Catechism, he would h*v« found the question solved at page 30, Butlers, but he may be excused as he is not a Catholic, nor doeshe know the teaching of the Pope snd the Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church. Captain Porter, Mr. McDonald, and Mr. Wilson, although Protestants, hare a thousand times more sense and feeling of justice and right than "No. 2 A Co," notwithstanding their Catholicity. — I am, Ac. Anothbr Catholic.
