POVERTY BAY SCHOOLS.
Thk Hawke's Bay Education Board at their meeting held on Tuesday last, re* ceived a letter from the Matawhero Committee, forwarding & bill of costs amounting to £16 12s. received by them from tho tixt'cutor of the late Mr. Rogan the cwHt.i being alleged to have been incurred in connection wiih the M?ta.vhero school «itt>. Tuo committee stated they were not aware of the account being dun, and sent it to the Board for payment — The opinion was expressed by members that tht-y did not think the B >ari was liable, and the matter was referred to the Board's solicitor. A letter was read, by content, from Thomas Wright, a member >f the Matawlieru School Committee, stating that the emmittee had been holding qk et ings without giving him notice of tht-ni, and without his knowledge, *nd inquiring if such meetings were not illegal - Mr. Tanner moved that the tatter be f irwnHed to the Chaiiman of the Committee for his report on it. — A letter rt: <<J at tho lust meeting of the Board, received from the Chairman was found, | and it contained a statement that the momber in question had made himself so obnoxious to the rest of the committee that they had adopted the extreme course of holding their meetings in a private house without giving him notice of them.— This satisfied the members of the Board as to the facts of the case. — Mr. Tanner m<<ved, and Mr. Sutton seconded, that a copy of the two It tters be forwarded to the Minister of Education. — The Inspector intimated that there were grounds for complaint against the conduct of the cotnrnitteeman in question. — It was, however, agreed that the other members of the committee could not meet without 6rst giving him notice, though they c>uM expel him from the meeting if he misbehaved himself. — Captain Russell moved as an amendment that the attention of the Chairman of the Committee be called to clause 71 of the Vet, miking it necessary that every member should have notice of every meeting. —The amendment was iccept-d in place of the motion and carried. A communication from the Education Department was read in reference to Te \rai School. The letter stated that the Government had failed in their endeavor to get the natives to alienate a piece of land for the site of the school ; that they did not feel warranted in giving £300 for building a school ; and thry would not, after December 31st, continue the payment of £50 a year to the masters out of the native school grant. The latter conclusion had been come to because after looking at the statistics of the school the) had come to the conclusion that it was an European school and not a native one. The Inspector stated that when he last visited the school he found 39 M »oris and 9 Europeans. He believed i' was the moat largely -at tended native school in New Zealand. He had written to the department explaining the matter. The opinion was expressed that the school would have to be closed if the subsidy w»s withdrawn. A letter was received from the mister of the Waerenga-a-hika school, in reference to his residence. — The Board decided that as the school was an aided one they could do nothing. A grant of £150 was made for additions to the teacher's residence of the Gisborne school. — A requisition was made for the sum of £20 for painting | the Orniond school. It was agreed that the midsummer holidays should commence on December Itith, and terminate on January 20th.
