The Poverty Bay herald AND East Ooast News Letter PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING GISBORNE: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8,1881.
At length, and after long waiting, some good, fairly broken metal is putting in an appearance in the Gladstone Road — that is, the metal is aa good as can be obtained •within accessible distance. But as the metal is only placed on the centre of the thoroughfare, and there is a wide margin on either side wide enough for throe vehicles abreast, we shall be rather surprised to find a bullock driver or n carter, i mounted horseman, or one in care of a buggy who would risk his cattle or his horse on the rough stones while there is a smooth space left to travel over. Perhaps the Borough Engineer will direct to he done what is invariably done in other places. This is to block traffic from the unmade portions of a road until the metalled parts have been worn down to something like a conglomerate. We had dispaired at one time of ever seeing any portion of the ten thousand loan expended so far dowu the business part of the town. But although late, still better late than not at all. VVe are advised that the Lydia Howarde Company will be unable to open to-morrow night owing to the steamer not arriving until late after the hour appointed for their opening. They will, however, we understand, perform on Thursday night for a season of three nights. It ia unfortunate that there should be so much disappointment*connected with their visit here. After the comparative calm in political matters, the monotony is to be broken by an address from one of the candidates— Captaiu Porter boing the first to announce that he will meet the electors. The meetwill be held in McFarlane's Hall, on Monday next. In the notice of acceptances for the Hurdle Race, in connection with to-mor- j row's meeting there was nn ommission. j Mr. E. Read BloomhVld's bk gelding Lizard, aged, 9st. 71H?. should have been included among the acceptances for this event.
The continuous downpour of rain to-day, is rather an untoward matter as far as the Waereuga-a-hika Birthday meeting is concerned—that is if the weather does not abate during the evening. In the forenoon the shower was usually copious and in a very short time the water tables iv Gladstone Road contained a great volume of water, which owinn to the insufficient <'utfall, and choking up of the cha.nn.-l with weeds, could not obtain a rapid discharge. The surface men were put on by the Borough Engineer, and soon effected a vent for the overflow in the streets. Late iv the afternoon there was every sif>u of improvement in the weather, so that we can reasonably expect a flue day for the sports to-morrow. The Weslfiyan Snnday School Anniversary Soiree'will be held in the Church, to-morrow evening, tea being on the table at 6 p.m. After tea a public meetfnj will be held, at which addrecses will be delivered by the Rev. J. Dellow, and other friends of the connection. The programme ! will be varied by the rendering of Bprcial | hymns by the Choir and Sabbath bchool children. These gatheriaj have always been well attended and notwithstanding the tnuny counter- attractions of the d;iy we hope to see a very large number of visitors on this occasion. Mr. John Somarvell, who has twice previously contested an election for a seat in the Borough Council, has now been returned unopposed to till the position rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. F. J. Piesse. He will occupy his seat for ten months, that being the unexpircd period of the term of office of his predecessor. We congratulate the ratepayers on the election of Mr. Somervell, who is, we feel assured, an able and competent critic on all matters relating to specifications of contracts— a very essential qualification in a Councillor. In another place iv our columns Mr. Somervell returns thanks to the ratepayers, for the honor conferred upon him. The nominations for the office of Mayor will cloce on Nov. 14th. As yet Mr. C. D. Bennett is the only candidate in the field, aud his caudidutUte is influealially supported, a3 will be seen from the name; of those signing the requisition. In all probability the office will be a walk over for Mr. Bennett. Mr. S. M. Wilson announces that conveyances will run to-morrow, between Gisboivie, and the Waerenga-a-liika Race Coure, starting from the Albion Club Hotel at 9.30 and 10.30, and returning after the last race. In the evening his traps will be laid on for Makaraka, to convey visitors to the Bazaar aud concert, to be held iv connection with the Presbyterian Church. Our East Coast correspondent writes as follows : — " Jocund spring weather and shoals of (ish sculling up the Uawa, have brought out lately the majority of the Tologa Bay people as disciples of "Ye 3entle craf^e " ; and iii many instances the aujjlers have been well rewarded for their trouble by good takes o f }j s h — But Mr. Cannon, of the Tologa Bay Hotel, this morniug caught a Tartar in the shape of a shark, measuring over 5 feet from tail to suout.— After a lengthened | struggle, hook and line holding good, our I worthy boniface succeeded in 'aodiiig the brute, which af.er auau^op.-y, he will hand over to the Natives for ultimate disposal. — A quick journey has recently been performed by Mr. James Fitzgerald, of this place. He started from Mullooly's Hotel at 9 a.m., on Saturday lust, arriv i d at Mr, O'Meara's Station, Awatere, at 3 p.m., returning again to Uawa by 11 p. m. the same uight. He rode throughout the same horse, well kuown in Gisborne as " Rooster." —First new potatoes dished up on Saturday night at Mullooly's Sea View Hotel, good size and flavour. — Dr. Pollen arrived on the 2nd aud initiated vaccination of Coast Natives which will be carried on by Mr. Scott, Native rrtedic .[ atteudant who has been appointed additional Publici Vaccinator under the Public Health Act.
