ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
Auckland, Thia Day. The 'Frisco mail steamer City of Sydney arrived in Auckland last evening. The following is a summary of the news : — AMERICA. Messages have been received from all the Governments in Europe, and from the Australasian Parliaments, regarding President Garfield's death The Queen of England caused to be placed on the bier of tho late President a floral tribute, inscribed " Queou Victoria, to the memory of the late President Gartield, as an expression of her sorrow and her sympathy with Mrs. Gartield and tho American nation." President Arthur was sworn in at tho Capitol by Chief Justice Waite, on September 22nd. He made a brief address, referring to the circumstances preceding his accession, and eulogising his predecessor. The address was quieting in tone and promises no present change. The assassin Guiteavi is in mortal dread of popular vengeance, but appears to look for a slight punishment by the Courts. The fund for Mrs. Garfield is rapidly approaching the amount of 300,000 dollars. Congress will voto her tho salary for the rest of the late President's term. A national monument to the late President is to be erected by 25 oeivL subscriptions which have been startea. 7 President Arthur issued a proclamation convening tho senate in extraordinary sesston. A railroad train in Arkansas was boarded and robbed of 30,000 dollars. The American Cabinet is to be entirely remodelled. Stanley, the African explorer, has been heard of by a letter dated Congo River, July 4. He had been so seriously ill in May as to h*ve prepared for death, but the crisis passed, and ho was strong and healthy at the time of writing. The opinion is general that Bennett's yacht Jennette has been caught in ice and the crew perished. Forest fires have swept overa largo part of Michigan, clearing several villages away inhabited chiefly by recentlyarrived Canadians. Over 1000 lives wore lost. The fires were chocked by the rain. Mason, the war ler who attempted to shoot. Guiteau, will be tried by court martial. It appears the guards haddr.iwn l"ta who were to kill Guiteau. The German Commission has arrived at Toronto, to report on the capabilities of Canada for large German immigration.
