The bodies of fourteen persona, who were suffocated have been taken out and placed in the church opposite the theatre. It is feared that 100 [men and women perished in the flames. New YonK, March 24.- -A dispatch from Nice says : The holocaust at the Opera House last evening was caused by a gas explosion at the back of the stage which set fire to the scenery. The flames spread with alarming rapidity, and soon enveloped the gas meter. The supply of gas being cut off, the body of tho house was Boon plunged in darkness. The crowd pressed madly toward the limited means of exit. The audience was large, and in panic hundreds were thrown down and trodden under foot. Those who endeavoured to extricate the
people hopelessly jammed between the doorway and the passages describe the scene as terrible. The shrieks of the wounded mingled with the cries of those in the galleries, whose very means of escape was cut off. Mme. Donadie, the priuia donna, was saved, but the tenor, the basso, the baritone, and a number of chorus singers were burned.
