EXIT OF SCANDINAVIANS FROM NAPIER.
Thk Maiiawatn Times says : — " We hear upon what is the very best authority, that there is even more than a probability that in a very short time the Scandinavian settlement at; Noraewood will be a thing of the past. The settlers there have in serious comtemplation the abandoning of their land altogether, and emigrating in a body to America ; and, with that end in view, have been making arrangements for chartering two ships for the conveyance of themselves and th^ir families. It is their intention to sail for San Francisco, and, from inquiries, they learn that by the course they propose to take they will get to their destination at something like £5 10s per head. They have been already in communication with the American Government, which has given them a promise that on their arrival at San Francisco they will be transported into the interior gratuitously. Surely there must be something radically wrong, when, after toiling for nine years at -the land, as the settlers at Norsewood have done, that-they should now think it tho best to abandon it to seek fresh fields."
